Music

Here are some musical ideas that you can try in a classroom!

Learn the Rap to the song 'In a Bowl'

Just like 'Tommy the Loose Goose', at the end of 'How to Bake a Cake' you can find a song. This song is called 'In a bowl'. It's a very simple song that goes through the different ingredients that were part of the cake. The song is heavily influenced by old school hip hop songs of the 2000's.

Why not try and learn the rap and also try and put some actions to each of the ingredients?

You can find a recording of it below:

How to Bake a Cake Rap Circle

Another musical activity provided in the iBook is the 'How to Bake a Cake Rap Circle', you can find it on the last page of the iBook.

There are 7 different spoken parts to learn each with different rhythms and words that you can find in the pdf below. Even if you're not a music reader just have a listen to the individual parts and learn it by ear.

When doing this activity, break your students into small groups and have them learn a different part then put it all together. You can experiment by:

  1. leaving some parts entirely

  2. Layering different parts, which means bringing in parts at different times

  3. Experimenting with different dynamics (loud and soft)

Rap Circle Extension

Once your students have gotten the hang of saying the different parts, try and replace the words with body percussion instead.

Things like clapping, clicking, stamping, jumping and patting. Any noise that the human body can make. For example instead of saying SNAP! they can do a really loud clap instead.

Try an experiment and see what different sounds you can make with your body.

Exploring the Sounds of your Environment

In a similar way that all the sound effects in 'Tommy the Loose Goose' were made with the mouth and the body. All the sound effects in 'How to Bake a Cake' were made with objects lying around my kitchen.

Here's a photo of what I used:

I used:

  1. An empty water bottle

  2. My car keys

  3. Spare change

  4. A plate

  5. A cup with a little bit of water

  6. A bowl

  7. A chopstick

  8. Rice

  9. A wet cloth

  10. An opened packet of Freddos

  11. And my Harry Potter piggy bank

  12. My table

  13. I kind of cheated and I used 1 egg as well

So now I challenge YOU to find objects in the classroom that you can use to create your own sound effects for How to Bake a Cake. You have to do a lot of experimenting to find different noises! Hitting, scraping, tapping, throwing, shaking, there are many ways to produce different sounds using everyday objects.
