Music Ideas

Tommy the Loose Goose is a funky dance track. Below you can find some ideas for music lessons. You won't need any fancy equipment for these lessons, All you'll need is a classroom and children.

Explore the Sounds Your Voice can Make

Soundscapes

Soundscapes are another awesome way to get kids exploring sounds. Have a look at this choir anyhow they created their rainsoundscape.

The rain sound effect in Tommy the Loose Goose was purely made up of sounds created by my mouth and my hands. It included:

  • Clicks

  • Claps

  • Popping sounds

  • Flicking my cheeks to create more popping sounds

Have your class try and create a rain soundscape!

Soundscapes Extension Activities

1. Write your own short story about Tommy with your own illustrations and create your own sound effects. Explore not only the sounds that your mouth and body can make but the sounds that the objects around your environment can make. Get creative and experiment with all the different objects you have in a classroom and see what kind of sounds you can make.

Shake things

Scrape things

Rub things

Hit things and see what kinds of sounds you can create

2. Find another book and create your own sound effects for that book. Think along the lines of We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Helen Oxenbury and Michael Rosen, an absolute children's classic.

Tommy the Loose Goose Rap

The Tommy the Loose Goose Rap was not written with the intention of having young children try and learn the words (but they are free to have a go). Rather, it is a dance track to get kids moving to the beat. The music is inspired by funky 80's hip hop music.

You'll notice in the recording that at certain points the music cuts out and you can hear sound effects related to the story, sounds like snoring or shouting. At these points in the song, the kids are meant to join in and create those sound effects. The list below is the order in which the sound effects appear in the song.

  1. Snoring noises

  2. Roaring at the thunder

  3. The noise you make after drinking something SUPER sour

  4. Running noises (makes sense when you know the dance)

  5. "Uh oh, Mama Goose is Coming"

  6. Sad/crying quack noise

During the chorus the kids are free to quack along to the music.

Tommy the Loose Goose lyrics

All the sound effects in Tommy the Loose Goose were produced with the voice. Use some of the scenarios in Tommy the Loose Goose and explore some of the sounds that the voice can make.

For example, use your voice to:

  • Show different emotions but only through quacking

  • Show how someone would react to drinking something sour

  • Show how different people/animals snore

Get creative and make up your own scenarios or just substitute some the previous ones. See what the kids can come up with.

Some examples:

  • Show different emotions but only through mooing

  • Show how someone would react to drinking something spicy

  • What kind of sound would Tommy make if he was on a rollercoaster?

  • Imagine a new friend for Tommy. What animal would Tommy's friend be? What sounds would it make?
